How do you select a domain name? What is
registration and how does it work? The main questions people have about
creating their website. Choosing a domain name that identifies your service, product
or information is key. This is a very
important step and is something that should involve a lot of thought and
consideration as it identifies what your website is all about and is a major
key to the success of your website
Your domain name is important in interesting
people to go to and visit your website and with time it will be the name that
people identify with your product, service or idea. So, how does one pick out a
god or appropriate domain name? You may
get frustrated in your search and find your domain is already registered. And you may even start to wonder if all the
good names taken for your website are taken.
And
you would be justified in your wondering and frustration. There are over 110,000,000 domain names
already registered. It’s a fact and
there will only be more and more registered as time goes on.
There are several rules for selecting good
domain names (should the names be available)”
1. Short is good – the shorter your domain name
the better – people are more apt to remember short words. If you can sum up your domain name with one
word that’s great. Try to keep it to
three words or under and try to keep your name at less than 18 – 20 characters.
2. Make sure your domain name is memorable TipsForTennis.com though 14 characters long
and three words is far more memorable than Bpcw3.com
3. Try
to stay with words that are easy to spell.
Do not use numbers or hyphens.
4. If
you are lucky enough to find the name you want get it with a .com extension. The .com extension is the most popular and
most likely to be typed in by a potential visitor. If not try to get the
.net or .org.
5. Make
sure your domain name is descriptive or your product, service or data.
Good luck, don’t get frustrated there is a domain out
there that you will be able to use. And
if it already registered you can always offer to buy it from the party who
registered it!
